The Financial Express NEW DELHI Thursday, March 9, 2000 HP, 3dMaxMedia in strategic alliance for
animation feed Nitya Varadarajan in Chennai, March 9, 2000:
Hewlett-Packard and 3dMaxMedia have formed a strategic alliance
to work together in content creation, distribution and transaction on
the Net. The MoU signed between
the two companies include joint marketing and promotional activities
to attract more enterprises to create their business in this framework. Addressing the conference here, HP vice-president
Ganesh Ayyar and 3dMaxMedia CEO Srini Vasan said that the tie-up came
about as the latter found the former’s enabling technology ‘e-speak’
the best in delivering content as it could be downloaded free and could
run on multiple platforms. The tie-up was, however, not mutually exclusive. 3dMaxMedia Inc. was set up in 1999 and has got some pioneering
products on hand which involve delivering animation related content
through the Internet. The 3dMax-Bali
Plugin is a real-time animation possibility where the viewer would be
able to change movements of actors, clothes, and add additional characteristics. In shore, this provides for interactive animation.
The 3dMax-RealMotion reduces movie production to half its time
by allowing the usage of a library consisting a comprehensive mix of
software and hardware. This
combines digital video and animation facilities. The 3dMax-Launch is a launchpad for music on the Net to enable
more music lovers to get familiar with records before buying them. The 3dMax-Submit is a 100 per cent Web-based
3D animation record label and useful for short feature films. The 3dMax-CommerceNow is for animation usage
in e-commerce and other vertical services. New transmission and compression algorithms are changing the
face of animation. The Internet
allows for interactivity and animation content will only grow to attract
retention on the site for the future, Ayyar and Vasan said. Srini Vasan is planning to set up a production facility in
India in one of the southern states.
“We are open as to choosing the state though there is a preference
for Tamil Nadu,” he said. The company will have an alliance with PentaMedia Graphics,
leveraging on their expertise. The
investment that 3dMaxMedia is initially planning is $5 million. The reason that India was chosen was because
of inherent strengths in data base, e-commerce and website development.
“The animation forms only 30 per cent of the entire exercise of content
creation and delivery,” he said. The alliance with HP could involve joint control of projects or both bidding of projects separately or could have one partner having control and the other deploying the new technologies. 3dMaxMedia will be coming out with an IPO which would most probably be the US “as huge funds were needed for the animation business”. Right now it is looking at strategic investors for initial investments. Besides delivering 3D content for the American and European markets, content will also be developed for India, Japan and China. Singapore will be the regional hub. The company is in the process of appointing a global firm to identify strategic media companies and portals as potential For More Information
